Gynaecologic Tests: Aspiration

The table below contains information on some aspiration tests used in the evaluation and diagnosis of disorders of the female reproductive system as well as during pregnancy. For information on other types of test, click here .

 
Aspiration Tests
Test Use
Culdocentesis To detect causes of pelvic pain or intra-abdominal bleeding or to confirm suspected ectopic pregnancy .
Dilation and curettage (D&C) To confirm suspected ectopic pregnancy or determine cause of postmenopausal bleeding .
Toluidine blue dye test To evaluate abnormal changes in the vulva . Toluidine blue is a dye that is selectively taken up by tissue that exhibits precancerous changes.
